What is Safe + Sound Week?

Safe + Sound Week doesn’t get the attention it deserves. It is a initiative by OSHA for companies to take a look at their safety programs and see how they can be improved. A safety program is the foundation of how a company operates in regards to safety. Successful safety programs are known to keep employees safe but also increase the operational efficiency, quality and overall productivity of the company.

Safe + Sound Week is typically the second week in August and there is a variety of ways companies can participate. There is no requirement for a specific event or a type of focus, its all about evaluating what the company has in place and how it matches up to the work being performed. For example, here is a list of things that could be focused on:

  • Demonstrate management’s leadership of the safety program

    • Walkthroughs, discussions in meetings, conversations, etc

  • Review and update emergency plans and procedures

  • Review / renew training of employees

  • Involve employees in safety walkthroughs or hazard assessments

  • Recognize employees for safe performance

  • Review upcoming work for safety concerns

  • Update outdated policies, procedures, JHAs, etc

  • Review recent incidents for preventative measures

Keeping the company’s safety program updated, functional and relevant enables the company to continually improve.
